The much-teased and "spied" 2016 Mitsubishi (Pajero) Montero Sport had just officially made its world premiere at the Big Motor Sale in Bangkok. It follows on a successful model which has achieved a cumulative sales of 400,000 units since its debut in 2008.
The new (Pajero) Montero Sport is Mitsubishi's new answer to the pick-up platform SUV market where it is set to go against the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford Everest, Isuzu Mu-X, and the newly launched Toyota Fortuner. It was developed on the concept of a "stylish and comfortable off-road SUV" highlighted by the "Dynamic Shield" front derived from the legendary Pajero. The styling is dynamic, edgy and more masculine compared to its predecessor.
Dimension-wise the new Montero Sport measures 4785 mm long, 1815 mm wide and 1805 mm sitting on a 2800 wheelbase. It is now longer, but standards shorter compared to its predecessor which measures at 4695 mm x 1815 mm x 1840 mm and retains the same wheelbase. Its legroom measures 2585 mm from first to third row promising comfort for occupants.
Ground clearance stands at 218 mm with a 30-degree approach angle, 23-degree ramp break-over angle and 24-degree rear departure angle. Suspension is composed of a double wishbone with coils up front and 3-link coil spring rear configuration updated with better damping and revised geometry for better handling and ride. Wading depth is rated at 700 mm, a 100 mm increase over its predecessor.
The interior design has been significantly restyled with the high center console with silver accents to mimic the Dynamic Shield front. A new four-spoke multi-function steering wheel with welcomes the driver with a new high-contrast instrument cluster featuring a new central multi-information display which shows drive and off-road modes as well as fuel consumption and eco-drive assistance. Sound insulation has also been upgraded to significantly reduce interior noise and more confortable seat material and contour, as well as revised mounting of air vents promises to provide better comfort for occupants.
For the Thai market, the Pajero Sport will be powered by the new 4N15 2.4-liter MIVEC commonrail turbo diesel engine rated at 181 PS @ 3500 rpm with a maximum torque of 430 Nm @ 2500. The engine will be mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission with idle neutral control and G-sensor.
It maintains the same class-leading 5.6 meter turning radius to reduce the number lock-to-lock turns. Combined with a new sharper engine hood shape, flat blade wipers and minimized blind spots in the new pillars; the (Pajero) Montero Sport aims to be easier to drive.
The new drivetrain for the all-wheel drive versions of the new (Pajero) Montero Sport will be the Super-Select 4WD-II system which comes with 2H (2-wheel high range), 4H (4-wheel high range), 4HLC (4-wheel high range with center differential lock) and 4LLC (4-wheel low range with differential lock).
A new "Off-road mode" for 4WD variants gives drivers choices between Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand and Rock (only in 4LLC drive mode) works with the Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) system which goes the extra mile in safety and performance.
Mitsubishi’s new SUV is built around the RISE impact safety body design with seven SRS airbags. A host of advanced safety features have been fitted to the 2016 Pajero Sport as well, Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Sport Warning (BSW), around view monitor, sonar parking sensors, and electronic parking brakes. To address concerns of pedal misapplication, a new Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS). Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control will also be standard in premium models.
Mitsubishi Motors Thailand has been tasked to be the official global production facility for the new (Pajero) Montero Sport. It will export to 90 countries from their Laemchabang factory, currently the largest production facility for the Japanese automaker.
Mitsubishi is opening the order books starting today for the Thai market with deliveries to commence Decemeber 2015.
For the Thai market, Mitsubishi will offer the Pajero Sport in three variants:
GT-Premium (4WD) - ThB 1,450,000
GT (2WD) - ThB 1,250,000
GLS-LTD (2WD) - ThB 1,138,000
