2018 Mazda BT-50 gets an off-road refresh for the Aussie Outback

Mazda Australia officially reveals restyled BT-50 for 2018

It may be set to be replaced soon but Mazda opted to give their midsize pickup one more facelift for 2018. Wearing a more mature face, the 2018 Mazda BT-50 gets an upscale redesign, along with new standard technologies.

Immediately seen on the 2018 BT-50 is the restyled front fascia. Unlike its predecessor which had a Mazda2-like grill, the refreshed pickup now has a three-slat grill reminescent of the previous-gen CX-5. Also new are the front bumper and the slightly tweaked headlights. Meanwhile, the 17-inch alloy wheels have been carried from the previous facelift, as well as the taillights and rear chrome bumper.

The cabin of the 2018 BT-50 still looks familiar and utilitarian. Gone, however, is the old infotainment system. Replacing it is a new Alpine touchscreen display which comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and even navigation. Besides having these, the updated pickup can also come with the following: reverse camera, chrome sports bar with LED stoplight, central-locking tailgate and a heavy-duty bed liner.

The Australian-spec 2018 BT-50 comes with two turbo-diesel options, the 3.2-liter turbo-diesel five-cylinder engine and the smaller 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. The former generates 200 PS at 3000 rpm along with 470 Nm of torque available at 1750 – 2500 rpm. Meanwhile, the latter produces 150 PS at 3700 rpm and 375 Nm of torque at 1500 - 2500 rpm. Available transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. Both versions are available as a 4x2 or 4x4.

In the future, the next-generation BT-50 will be based off an all-new Isuzu pickup. However, there is no word yet if it will be derived off the all-new D-Max.
