It’s been a long time coming. After being previewed last March and being accompanied by a lengthy teaser campaign, the wait is finally over. Say hello to the all-new 2020 Mazda3.

Set to make a big splash in the compact car market, the fourth-generation Mazda3 gets a sleek new look, a simpler and more refined cabin, improved powertrain options, as well as a plethora of new and updated technologies.

Starting off with its looks, the Mazda3 has received an evolutionary redesign rather than a revolutionary one. With its slightly more mature exterior, it has a bolder and more aerodynamic look than its predecessors. The front fascia keeps the signature thin LED headlights, while the bigger front grill and sportier-looking front bumper give the Mazda3 a snazzier appearance.

If the front gets a subtle makeover, it is perhaps the rear which gets the most obvious of changes. Whether it’s the sedan or sportback model, both body styles received a sexy flowing design thanks to a fresh set of taillights, and more prominent sheetmetal. Finally new alloy wheel designs round up the exterior changes on the fourth-gen Mazda3.

The inside of the 2020 Mazda3 gets a redesign as well. Thanks to its minimalist look, the dashboard is almost devoid of any jutting buttons or controls apart from the dual-zone automatic climate control. This makes for a cleaner and more unified dashboard design. Meanwhile, the center console gets a refresh as well thanks to a new set of buttons and updated rotary knob for manipulating the 8.8-inch MZD infotainment system. And instead of a fully-digital instrument panel, Mazda bucked the trend with a three-pod gauge cluster complete with a multi-info display.

Other amenities and in-car features available in the new Mazda3 include: dual-zone automatic climate control with rear aircon vents, leather-trimmed seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto support, navigation, voice command, adaptive cruise control, 12-speaker Bose sound system, and the Active Driver heads-up display

Under the hood, a total of two engine options are available for the all-new Mazda3. First up is the 1.5-liter SkyActiv-G inline-four which puts out 111 PS at 6000 rpm along with 146 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. Meanwhile, higher-grade variants get the more powerful 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G that produces 154 PS at 6000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.

Both engines are mated to an improved SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission that comes with manual select and paddle shifters. Sadly, the new 2.0-liter SkyActiv-X is not available for the Philippine market as it is only compatible with Euro6 fuel.

Besides having an improved powertrain, the all-new compact also adopts the new SkyActiv-Vehicle architecture. Lightweight and more rigid, Mazda claims it will deliver better handling, as well as improved riding comfort than before. In addition, Mazda updated the rear suspension of the all-new compact as it now has a torsion beam rear instead of a multi-link setup.

A wide array of safety kit and features are equipped as standard on the all-new Mazda3. These include: a host of airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, dynamic electronic stability and traction controls, tire pressure monitoring, driver attention alert, high beam headlight control, reverse camera with parking sensors, and an engine immobilizer.
