Beijing 2016: Porsche debuts the 718 Cayman

Turbo flat-four replaces flat six engine

First, it was the Boxster and now, it's the Cayman's turn to get the 718 moniker. According to Porsche, the 718 Cayman is all new for 2017. Like the 718 Boxster, the renamed Cayman will be powered by two new engines, both turbocharged flat fours.

Styling changes were kept to a minimum for the 2017 718 Cayman. Porsche restyled its front bumper for better airflow to its intercooler and cooling system. Also getting mild tweaks are the headlights and tail lights, now with darker highlights. New wheel options will be available as well.

Inside, it gets some styling cues from the 918 hybrid supercar. New aircon vents and steering wheel are the biggest changes made inside. Porsche did add options for the 718 Cayman. The entry-level coupe can be equipped with the Connect module which adds Porsche Car Connect, Apple CarPlay, and USB port. Also offered is a Navigation module that features voice control and real-time traffic information.

The new turbocharged flat four engines replace the old naturally aspirated flat sixes. The new base engine has been downsized to 2.0 liters but produces more power than the outgoing 2.7 liter engine. The engine of the base model 718 Cayman now produces 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque (250 Ps and 310 Nm for China), up by 25 PS and 91 Nm. For the 718 Cayman S, it gets a 2.5 liter turbo flat four which is also more powerful than the naturally aspirated 3.4 flat six. Compared to the old engine, power is up by 25 PS and 50 Nm of torque, giving the new 718 Cayman S an output of 350 PS and 420 Nm of torque.

In addition, Porsche also made minor tweaks to the 718 Cayman's chassis. For 2017, it gets firmer springs and stabilizers and re-tuned dampers. Porsche claims that the steering is now 10 percent more direct while the rear wheels are an inch and a half inches wider compared to before.

At the time of writing, there is no word regarding the availability of the 2017 718 Cayman in the Philippine market.
