Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) recently annnounced the export launch of the Xpander MPV from its manufacturing facility in Bekasi, Indonesia. The first country in the ASEAN region to receive exports of Mitsubishi's all-new Xpander will be the Philippines. It will then be followed by Thailand, Vietnam and other international markets in the coming months.
Present during the event was Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Ministry of Industry Airlangga Hartarto. They were also joined by MMC CEO Osamu Masuko to celebrate the achievement. Coincidentally, the export launch comes a year after the Bekasi plant was inaugurated.
"I am delighted that our company can contribute to the growth of Indonesia, which has been so supportive since we first arrived almost 50 years ago. The export of Xpander is an important milestone in our ongoing business plan, and adds further to our strong foundations in ASEAN, which are key drivers of our growth in the region," said Masuko.
Apart from the official export launch of the Xpander, the event also marks the first time Mitsubishi Motors will export vehicles on a massive scale from Indonesia. It is expected that 30,000 units of the MPV will be exported within the year alone. Furthermore, dealers in Indonesia alone already have taken over 66,000 orders for the vehicle.
Currently, the Xpander compromises 50-percent of production at Mitsubishi Motor's Bekasi plant, which is capable of producing 160,000 units units per year. To meet demands, the automaker plans to increase production to 10,000 units a month beginning July.
Mitsubishi Motor Philippines expects to turn over the first batch of units of the Xpander to customers in May.
