Porsche has heard the cries of enthusiasts wanting a manual 911 GT3. Following the stir up caused when they revealed the previous 911 GT3 would only come with a PDK gearbox, it seems like the German manufacturer was listening. So for the 2018 911 GT3, the manual transmission is back.
The new manual gearbox is a six-speed unit found in the 911 R unlike the 7-speed gearbox found in the lesser 911s. The gearbox does use shorter gear ratios, giving better acceleration and shorter throws for a better feel. Much like the out going 911 GT3, the PDK gearbox comes as standard but it now features a manual gearbox option at no extra cost. The manual option would allow buyers to choose whether they would want to have a stick or PDK, a first for the GT3 line.
Powering the upcoming GT3 is a newly developed 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine based on the 911 GT3 R and the 911 RSR. Its new engine is also built from the same production line as the race engine. The new 4.0-liter powerplant now produces 507 PS and 460 Nm of torque, which revs up to 9000 rpm.
With the new manual gearbox, the GT3 can sprint fro 0 - 97 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 319 km/h. Meanwhile, the PDK gearbox can go from 0 - 97 km/h in 3.2 seconds but has a slightly lower top speed of 317 km/h. Despite the better acceleration figures, choosing to have the PDK transmission would make the GT3 slightly heavier, weighing it at 1430 kg, while the manual weighs in at 1413 kg.
Much like the outgoing GT3, it features an active Rear Axle Steering for better handling and driving dynamics. Exterior wise, the 991.2 GT3 has a revised front fascia, optimized for better airflow. Towards the rear, a new diffuser and a light weight carbon fiber wing also contribute to the overall aerodynamic efficiency.
Inside, the steering wheel is borrowed from the 918 and has optional carbon fiber full bucket seats or the conventional sports seats. The infotainment system also includes Porsche's Track Precision App, letting drivers analyze track data on their mobiles through an app.
