GIIAS 2017: Global debut of 2018 Mitsubishi Xpander MPV

Mitsubishi holds global reveal of all-new Xpander MPV

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is about to enhance its presence in the ASEAN region with the global premiere of their new multi-purpose vehicle at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

The new model is called the Xpander, and it combines the many important features that are key in the ASEAN market such as the ride height and styling of an SUV along with the efficiency and versatility of an MPV.

"The Mitsubishi Xpander is set to expand MMC's strong presence in the Indonesian SUV and Light Commercial Vehicle markets further into the booming MPV segments and beyond, throughout the ASEAN region. We intend to be right at the forefront of this growth by expanding customers' lives," said Mr. Osamu Masuko, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Chief Executive Officer

The design of the Xpander is centered around the Dynamic Shield fascia that is common amongst many of Mitsubishi's global and regional models such as the Outlander, Montero Sport/Pajero Sport, and Eclipse Cross. The Xpander has LED headlights and L-shaped LED taillights, and a roofline with a floating look thanks to the black B- and C-pillars, along with the edgy D pillar.

Inside, the Xpander has seating for seven persons in a 2-3-2 layout. With both the middle and third rows folded (60:40 and 50:50 split, respectively) the Xpander creates a full flat surface for loading cargo. Ingress and egress into the third row is made easier by the ability of the middle row to tumble forward.

Powering the Xpander is an improved version of the 4A91 1.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine that produces 105 PS and 141 Nm of torque. It also features the company's proprietary MIVEC valve timing technology.  Apart from MIVEC, the engine also benefits from several features that reduce engine noise and vibration. These include: forged crankshaft, chain case with internal high-rigidity engine mount bracket, aluminum oil pan and an aluminum exhaust manifold cover.

It can come with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. According to Mitsubishi, the self-shifting gearbox has been made lighter and more compact for the Xpander. In addition, the transmission can detect if the vehicle is going up a hill, allowing it to automatically use the lower gear ratios for constant power. The Xpander is front wheel drive only.

For convenience, the Indonesian-spec Xpander comes with a dual airconditioning system, a multimedia entertainment system with connectivity with Bluetooth and USB connect, stability control, ABS, and other features.

The 2018 Xpander is built at Mitsubishi's new plant in Bekasi, Indonesia.
