Usually when we do spy photography stories, they’re taken in far away places like Scandinavia or Europe. This time, however, the photos we received were taken much closer to home.
Actually, they were taken right here.
If these shots -sent in by a reader- are to be believed, what we are looking at appears to be a camouflaged SUV being tested on Philippine roads. More specifically, the shape of the D-pillar indicates that it could be the Nissan Terra; a pick-up passenger vehicle (PPV) that is based on the Nissan Navara.
Now the Navara-based seven seat SUV has been spotted before, but these images of the vehicle -complete with what appears to be a conduction sticker and several Philippine-style tricycles in the foreground- clearly indicate that it is being tested in the country.
The reader who sent us the photos say that these were snapped on the road in Tarlac. Unfortunately, there were no images of the front of the vehicle itself.
The Navara-based SUV being road tested here actually makes a lot of sense as Philippines is a very important market for PPVs in the ASEAN region.
PPVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Montero Sport (Pajero Sport in other markets), Isuzu mu-X, Ford Everest, and Chevrolet Trailblazer are all very strong sellers. In 2017, the Toyota Fortuner sold so well that it actually overtook the Vios as the undisputed number one selling vehicle in the country.
The Terra is expected to have a similar range of engines and transmissions to the Navara such as the 2.5-liter common rail turbodiesel and the 7-speed automatic. Unlike the competitors, the Navara itself already had coil spring rear suspension from the start.
It is expected that the Terra will make its official global debut later this year.
