With most of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup out, it was only a matter of time before Mercedes-AMG revealed what they say is “the most potent version of the E-Segment sedan yet.” A step above the E43 AMG is the 2018 E63 and E63 S, now packing a smaller but more powerful V8 engine.
The new E63 and E63 S are now powered by the 4.0 liter Biturbo V8, similar to the one found in the smaller C63. It gains more power from the C63 derived block with the E63 putting out 571 PS and 750 Nm of torque. Opt for the E63 S and figures rise to 611 PS and 850 Nm of torque. The 4.0 Biturbo in the E63 and E63 S benefit from two twin-scroll turbochargers which, AMG says, improves response and minimizes lag. As for its transmission, it shifts via a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission for both models and lays the power down with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
Several exterior details were added in to differentiate the E63 from the lesser powered counterparts. At the front are AMG bumpers with a grill exclusive to the high-performance E-Class. On its fenders are arrow-shaped wing signets in silver chrome bearing a V8 BITURBO 4MATIC+ badge. At the rear is a spoiler lip the trunk lid, rear bumper with diffuser-look insert, and bright chrome-plated twin tailpipes. Inserts in silver chrome differentiate the E63 S from the E63.
More AMG touches can be seen inside. It gets nappa leather trim for the instrument panel and beltlines, sport steering wheel with a crystal grey 12 o'clock marking and contrast topstitching, an AMG crest in the front head restraints, crystal grey seat piping, IWC-designed analogue clock and seat belts in crystal gray. AMG-specific instrument cluster places all important information in the driver's field of vision. Dials get a checkered-flag look and gets the RACETIMER system for recording lap times on circuits.
Mercedes-AMG says they have also upgraded the big sedan's handling. Aside from the all-wheel drive system, it now rides on wider tires. The E63 comes with 265/35 ZR 19 front tires and 295/30 ZR 19 rear tires while the E63 S runs on tires of sizes 265/35 ZR 20 at the front and 295/30 ZR 20 for the rear. AMG also retuned the air suspension for a more performance oriented set up. Also model-specific is the entirely re-engineered rear axle which is said to be more rigid and wider than the standard models. The E63 and E63 S stop with large cross-drilled brakes with carbon ceramic discs as an option for the E63 S. For those who want to run these cars on rear wheel drive, shut off the stability control, put the transmission in manual mode and set the car on Race Mode.
