Lamborghini continues to expand the Huracan lineup after debuting the all-new Huracan Spyder with rear-wheel-drive. According to the automaker, the new soft-top Huracan is set to deliver the appeal of open-top motoring, along with the fun driving experience of rear-wheel drive.
“The rear-wheel drive Spyder enlargesthe Huracán family’s core product range. This is a Lamborghini for those with a passion for life and the purest driving experience on the open road. It’s also a Huracán for those entering the Lamborghini family, wanting a true Spyder experience without compromising on the performance and dynamic handling of a rear-wheel drive car,” said Stefano Domenicali, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
Compared to hardtop Huracans, Lamborghini claimed the new Spyder model features a newly designed front and rear. The front section gets large air intakes which direct cooling air and headwind increase downforce on the front axle.
Shod in the wheel wells are 19-inch five-spoke Kari alloys. Meanwhile, providing grip is a set of Pirelli PZero tires.
But perhaps the centerpiece of the new Huracan Spyder is its fabric soft-top. It can be deployed at speeds of up to 50 km/h and can open and close in as little as 17 seconds. When not in use, two unique fins deploy near the headrest which accentuate the Spyder's low and powerful stance. The fins are not only for looks as Lamborghini said these optimize airflow through the engine bay when the roof is down.
Propelling the Huracan is the 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V10 that pushes out 580 PS at 8000 rpm along with 540 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. It is then married to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Without the all-wheel-drive system, the rear-wheel-drive Huracan Spyder is lighter with a dry weight of 1,500 kg and has a 60:40 weight distribution. 0 – 100 km/h is achieved in 3.6 seconds while top speed is rated at 319 km/h.
The power management system has been tuned for the rear-wheel-drive Huracan Spyder. With it, Lamborghini was able to adjust the steering, stability and traction control system for rear-wheel-drive settings. The braking system has been tweaked as well according to the automaker. It now has specially contoured steel brakes with aluminum disc brake pots that lessen overall weight of the Huracan Spyder.
