Lexus just made the upcoming fifth-generation LS safer than ever before by complementing its existing Safety System + with the luxury automaker’s most innovative set of safety features that will come from its latest package, the Safety System + A.
The existing LS already comes with the Lexus Safety System + that offers Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Lane Keeping Assist, and Automatic High Beam.
To enhance these current safety features, Lexus introduces the Safety System + A that will come with eight assistive systems designed to eliminate traffic casualties. These are the following:
PCS (with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist)
Aside from the current features of the Lexus PCS, it will now come with the world’s first Pedestrian Alert technology that will detect the presence of a pedestrian in front of the vehicle, determine the direction they are headed and display the information on the vehicle’s color heads-up display. If a collision cannot be avoided using brake control, Active Steering Assist will kick in to mitigate a collision or reduce damage to the vehicle. An alert will go off and brakes will also be manipulated by the system.
A driving assist feature that points to Lexus’ efforts in research and development of automated driving, Lexus CoDrive comes with Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) that is activated only when Adaptive Cruise Control is turned on. LTA helps in keeping the vehicle centered in its own lane by using a camera that detects lane marking while also tracing the path of the vehicle ahead. It also uses GPS data to determine if the LS is entering a corner too fast and promptly alerts the driver of the situation before slowing the vehicle down.
Lane Change Assist (LCA)
LCA works together with the turn signals and assists the driver in changing lanes by monitoring the area around the LS and finds the right timing before controlling steering and throttle input to facilitate the move.
- Driver Emergency Stop Assist (coordinated with LTA)
If the driver does not respond to alerts from LTA, Driver Emergency Stop Assist will kick in via audio and visual alerts before assisting the vehicle to a full stop. It will begin by turning on the hazard lamps and honking the horn to alert other vehicles. During this time, the system shall also decelerate the LS until it comes to a stop in the same lane, after which the doors will be unlocked and HELPNET will be activated to call for a rescue.
Two-Stage Adaptive High-Beam System (AHS)
Using the eight LED lights at the top and 16 below on each of the headlamps, optimal lighting is achieved. Any of these row of lights can be turned on or off using their respective switches so that the driver can set the amount of light he gets based on his preference while also reducing glare to oncoming traffic.
Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA)
This is another world-first feature that detects forward cross-traffic vehicles and the direction it is going at an intersection to prevent a collision by using radar. Drivers are alerted on the heads-up display, the vehicle’s multi-information display and a buzzer that goes off.
Road Sign Assist (RSA)
Using a camera and GPS data, this features gathers information from road signs ahead to warn the driver via the heads-up display and multi-information display.
In addition to the new Lexus Safety System + A, the all-new LS will also come with Parking support brakes, Panoramic View Monitor and Digital Rear-View Mirror.
Parking support brakes detect moving vehicles, pedestrians and even stationary objects using Intelligent Clearance Sonar and the world’s first Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake (RCTAB) to prevent collision or at least minimize damage and/or injury.
Panoramic View Monitor now gets side clearance view and cornering view functions to conduct periphery safety checks. An image is rendered on the vehicle’s 12.3-inch display to allow the driver to safety maneuver in along tight corners and on extremely narrow streets.
The Digital Rear-View Mirror uses a camera that’s built into the rearview mirror. It allows the driver to make safety checks without his view getting obstructed by rear passengers, the rear headrests or even the rear window shade. A lever switches the display between optical mirror mode and digital mirror mode.
