Audi recently unveiled the Q8 concept at this year's North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The automaker claims that the concept features a combination of a spacious SUV and the dynamic lines of a coupe.
“The Q8 concept is an Audi in peak form. It demonstrates the strengths of our brand in both technology and design while providing a glimpse at a future full-size, production SUV,” said Dietmar Voggenreiter, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at Audi AG.
Starting with the exterior, the Q8 concept shows an impressive presence in its segment as it measures 5,022 mm long. It also gets an octogonal Single frame and honeycomb insert, which serves as its distinguishing feature. Flat, wedge-shaped headlights are also integrated progressively into the exterior to the surrounding air inlets.
The doors do not have window frames which contribute to the flat roofline. Meanwhile the fenders, doors and side panels are athletically designed. Also, it rides on a strongly accentuated wheel arches featuring a double design.
Inside, Audi claims that with a wheelbase of 2987 mm, the Q8 concept offers an expansive space for four people and a large luggage capacity of 630 liters. It also features a widely stretched lines creating a sporty look for the cockpit. Meanwhile, a virtually floating console provides the driver control over the eight-speed tiptronic transmission purely electronically.
It is also equipped with a black panel, which allows the monitor to be transparent within the surface when switched off and perfectly assimilated into the design line when on. The seats are covered in a both Fine Nappa leather and Nubuk leather, finished in pastel silver. Audi also offers a three-dimensional, engineered grain on the instrument panel, doors and floor.
Under the hood, Audi used a combination of production technologies such as a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an electric motor, producing a total output of 449 PS and 700 Nm of torue. Meanwhile, the powertrain uses a lithium-ion battery which consists of 104 prismatic cells and a capacity of 17.9 kWh.
The combustion engine alone produces 338 PS and 500 Nm of torque, while the electric motor generates 136 PS and 330Nm. Audi also claims that it takes only two and a half hours to fully-charged with a 7.2 kW output.
The automaker said that the Audi Q8 concept is the brand's basis for a production model to be launched in 2018.
