With the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 announced before the opening of the 2016 New York International Auto Show, people just expected to see it in metal form at the show. But Chevrolet had a surprise up their sleeve when they arrived at the annual motor show with a topless variant in the form of the ZL1 Convertible.

According to Chevrolet, it sits on the same modular platform of the coupe variant and features the same styling cues, apart from the retractable roof. In addition, Chevrolet deemed the new model as a 'high-performance convertible'.

Starting with the front fascia, it gets the redesigned bumper with larger air dams and new front splitter. It also has a new hood that is comprised of a carbon fiber insert and heat extractor. Over to its side, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels finished fill the wheel wells along with unique side skirts.

Providing the necessary grip is a staggered wheel and tire setup courtesy of . The front tires measure 285/30 R20 while the rear gets 305/30 R20 Goodyear F1 Super Eagle rubber. A low profile spoiler on the rear delivers improved downforce for better cornering ability.

Aboard the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible

Like the coupe, the cabin has Recaro seats upholstered in suede and leather with red contrast stitching. More of the red stitching and suede material can also be seen throughout the cabin along with bright red seatbelts. Also present are ZL1 badges, flat-bottom steering wheel and Chevrolet MyLink that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Driving the rear wheels is a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 that delivers 640 PS and 868 Nm of torque. Moreover, it also has a unique intake and exhaust system specific for the ZL1 alone. Two transmission choices are available for the ZL1 and ZL1 convertible, a 6-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Chevrolet also claims that the 10-speed gearbox will be able to keep the engine at optimal rpm levels when exiting corners.

Apart from the supercharged powertrain, the Camaro ZL1's handling was also upgraded. It gets Magnetic Ride Suspension, Performance Traction Management, electronic limited slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Drive Mode Select. Better stopping power comes courtesy of six-piston monobloc front calipers and 390mm two-piece front discs from Brembo.
