Bentley has a large SUV, so will Rolls-Royce with the Cullinan. Not wanting to miss out of the growing ultra-luxury SUV market, Mercedes-Benz's Maybach are seriously considering giving the full-sized GLS a swankier, plusher redesign. Should it reach production, this expands Maybach's lineup to two models with the S-Class already getting the plusher treatment two years ago.
This report comes from a 'high-ranking official' from Daimler, who spoke to Autocar UK regarding the matter. The official said that the success of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class surpassed sales expectations and would like to like to expand the Maybach name to the SUV market. The added that the GLS will ride on a new platform as well, making it an all-new model.
At the moment however, it is yet to be known if this approach will see the GLS badged in two ways, one as a Mercedes-Benz, the other as a Mercedes-Maybach. What we can expect the Maybach-built GLS to be is big, likely to be the one of the largest among its ultra-luxury peers. Reports say that the public will see it in concept form as the 'Maybach 9' at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show.
The production version is said to be out by 2019. Once in the market, it is set to go up against the likes of the Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus (in terms of price) and Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography.
