Report: Next-gen Mitsubishi Mirage may be Renault-based

Future Mitsubishi Mirage to share platform with Renault Clio

While Mitsubishi is committed to expanding their SUV and crossover range, the Japanese automaker is not turning its back on the Mirage. With Mitsubishi now under the Renault-Nissan Alliance, it has been reported that the next-generation Mirage will be based on a Renault product.

Mitsubishi’s corporate vice-president and product planning head Vincent Cobee told reporters that they are looking to use Renault (and Nissan) platforms for the small hatchback category. If so, the car the next-gen Mirage will be based on is the Renault Clio. The Clio is Renault's entry into the B-segment hatch class and, if Mitsubishi will use the platform, the Mirage hatch will move up one size class.

With Mitsubishi under their wing, the Renault-Nissan Alliance will go for a three-pronged approach for the B-segment. At the same time, Mitsubishi UK chief Lance Bradley has confirmed that the all-new Mirage can be specified as fully-electric vehicle with gas models to complement it. That said, the French hatchback is also likely to spawn a Nissan counterpart, possibly the next-generation Note.

As for engines, the report said that these too may also be shared with Renault and Nissan. One of the likely candidates is the Renault TCe 90, a turbocharged, three-cylinder motor with a displacement of 899cc. In the current Clio, it produces 90 PS and 135 Nm of torque. Another possible engine to be fitted to the future Mirage is a three-cylinder, 1.2-liter unit which both Renault and Nissan use for their small cars.
