Spied: 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe seen for the first time

2 Series Gran Coupe marks more front-wheel drive BMWs coming soon

While BMW is tight-lipped on plans to sell the 1 Series sedan outside China, it appears that a different kind of small BMW four-door is set for worldwide distribution. Our spies have snapped photos of the 2 Series Gran Coupe, a sleeker version of its sedan counterpart. This new model will serve as the junior four-door coupe in the BMW range, slotting below the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

According to our spies, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is certain to sit on the automaker's UKL modular platform. That means it shares its architecture with various Mini models, as well as the 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, 1 Series sedan and the upcoming third-generation 1 Series hatchback. That said, BMW is further expanding its front-wheel drive range as well. Once in production, the C-segment four-door coupe will be the fifth car from the marque to feature front-wheel drive.

The car seen here appears to be an early prototype as it is sporting non-production headlights and false tail lights. Defining styling cues are well hidden by false panels but do expect the car to come with several signature BMW details including corona rings in the headlights, L-shaped tail lights, kidney grills and, of course, the Hoffmeister Kink. Our spies did say that the headlights will be reminiscent of '02 Series' BMWs from the 60's and 70's.

What is final is the general shape of the car. True to BMW's Gran Coupe tradition, it employs a rakish, fastback design with pillarless doors. However, it is yet to be known if it will be a liftback, like the 4 Series Gran Coupe, or if it will have a trunk, like the soon to be outgoing 6 Series Gran Coupe. Our spies also report that the car is around the size of the 2 Series Active Tourer, meaning it is in the region 4,500 to 4,600 mm. These measurement estimates make it distinctly smaller than the 3 Series.

Engines are likely to be shared with several Mini models and the other UKL platform BMWs. That means a range of turbocharged three and four-cylinder motors from 1.5-liters to 2.0 liters. At least one diesel option is certain, as well as two transmission choices, namely a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. As mentioned, the standard drivetrain layout is front-wheel drive but xDrive all-wheel drive will also be available as an option.
