Spied: BMW prepares more powerful M2 CS

BMW M2 gets a track-oriented model

BMW's hottest 2 Series, the M2, is set for a new track-oriented model in the near future. Our spies have caught a more powerful version of the marque's smallest M car undergoing winter testing. It also appears that the 2 Series line is up for a facelift (LCI or Life Cycle Impulse in BMW speak) as well, judging from the covers on the car.

The camouflage surround on the headlights suggests a minor tweak for these units. Also, the large cover on the front bumper also hints a new look once the sports coupe is released. It is also likely that the grill will be slightly altered, given that it is covered. The rear tail light elements are also different on this test car with its reverse lights moved lower. This being a CS model, the rear diffuser is more pronounced.

There are small details that define this tester as an M2 CS. It sports a different exhaust system and looks similar to the ones used in the M3 and M4. Another difference is the location of the transmission oil cooler. In the standard M2, these are located behind the kidney grills but the ones seen here have been repositioned lower

Our spies suggested that the M2 CS might get the more powerful S55 engine seen in the M3 and M4 but will be detuned for this application. The standard M2 meanwhile retains the uprated N55 engine which saw service in various BMW models.

Besides more power, the M2 CS is set to get chassis enhancements as well. While nothing is specific just yet, the suspension will have a setting exclusive to the track-oriented model. It will also add in more aerodynamic parts such as a front splitter. It may also get a rear spoiler from the M Performance parts catalog.

According to our spies, expect the M2 LCI to be revealed by late 2017 while the M2 CS is slated for a 2018 debut.
