Spied: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 gunning for performance crossover supremacy

Mercedes-AMG preps another high-performance crossover with GLE 63

We've said it before and we'll say it again: 2018 is shaping up to be the year of the high-performance crossover. Mercedes-Benz has been a longtime player in the ever growing niche market and they will be adding yet another one with the next-generation GLE 63 AMG. One it reaches full production, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 will go head to head with the likes of the BMW X5 M, Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

With that, the upcoming GLE 63 will continue Mercedes-AMG's tradition of building a high-performance version of their SUVs and crossovers, along their potent sedans, coupes and cabriolets. As the sports crossover niche becomes more popular in the mainstream, it is also one of the most important cars Mercedes-AMG will be producing. So what can we expect from the next-gen GLE 63?

For starters, there's a new body which is currently heavily camouflaged at the moment. Do expect it to follow the form of the smaller GLC crossover with its more rounded lines and edges. Also, it is likely that it will incorporate styling cues from the car it is based on, the Mercedes-Benz E Class. Seen are the production headlights which draw inspiration from the CLS, along with the now signature LED signature. Being an AMG, there's the Panamera grill, which is still camouflaged for now.

Speaking of which, key AMG touches are present on the car. A closer look reveals large corner air intakes and a lower apron at the front. Blistered wheelarches are seen on the side, along with large, cross-drilled disc brakes. Lastly, a quad exhaust pipe arrangement marks it as a full AMG model.

As for the engine, our spies say it will be the 4.0-liter BiTurbo V8 the company has been using for a while now. This particular engine sees duty in the Mercedes-AMG C63, E63, and the GT. A GLE 63 S is also to be expected, which will pack more power over the non-S version. Power outputs have yet to be confirmed but it is currently pegged at 570 PS for the GLE 63 and over 600 for the GLE 63 S.
