Mercedes-Benz has revealed the Vision Tokyo concept, an autonomous luxury vehicle, during the 44th Tokyo Motor Show.
The German automaker says the Vision Tokyo concept has been developed for the “Generation Z” or to individuals who were born since 1995. With that in mind, Mercedes-Benz says the Vision Tokyo concept previews the car of the future as a “special type of mobile living space” or a “chill-out zone.”
“The Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo embodies the concept of an automotive lounge for a future generation of megacities. The Vision Tokyo is our tailor-made product for young people in megacities,” said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG.
Aesthetically, the concept is fitted with sharp-looking headlights, an aggressive bumper and a large grill that can display a series of different lighting functions as well as a sound pattern whenever music is playing inside the vehicle.
Turning at the side, the Vision Tokyo concept has an illuminated side skirts and a continuous stretch of glass paneling which similar to the glazed cockpit of a powerboat according to Mercedes-Benz. It also has an upward-swinging door on the left-hand side.
The rear of the Vision Tokyo concept features an unconventional design as seen on the vehicle's window that comes with an LED surround. The concept's bulky bumper is integrated with a bluish white glow. Furthermore, it has a 360-degree camera with sensors to enable the concept to drive autonomously.
Dimension-wise, the concept measures 4803mm long, 2100mm wide and 1600mm tall. It is finished off with a set of 26-inch wheels.
Inside, the Vision Tokyo concept has a “connected lounge” that features a large, oval-shaped couch, wraparound LCD screens and 3D holograms for the entertainment system.
Powering the Vision Tokyo concept is a cell plug-in hybrid system that features hydrogen tanks and a high-voltage battery. Through this, Mercedes-Benz says the concept has a total range of 980 km.
