Toolbox-inspired Toyota TJ Cruiser concept revealed

Toyota combines crossover looks with van spaciousness in new Tj Cruiser

Toyota's idea for a future crossover appears to take on the form of two vehicles in one it seems. Called the Tj Cruiser, Toyota described the unique concept of having 'harmonious balance between the roominess of a cargo van and the powerful design of an SUV'.

Featuring a very distinct exterior design coupled to a uniquely spacious cabin, the Tj Cruiser blends crossover-like looks with utilitarian functionality. Its square-shaped design means it can hold large and tall luggage with ease like surfboards, bikes and light furniture.

Meanwhile, the hood, roof and fenders are scratch- and dirt-resistant to complement its rugged form. Completing it all are the large 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone tires.

In terms of size, the Tj Cruiser measures 4300 mm long, 1775mm wide and is 1620mm tall. It also has a 2750mm wheelbase and can seat four.

It's inside where Toyota worked their magic in making the Tj Cruiser a capable hauler. All of the seats can be folded flat and come with tie-down points for securing loose cargo. Both the sliding doors and rear tailgate come have large openings which makes for storing or removing cargo easier. In fact, Toyota claimed that items up to approximately 3 meters long can fit inside the Tj Cruiser.

It is underpinned by the next-generation TNGA platform and is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that is helped along by a hybrid system. Exact output figures were not revealed.

As for its name, Toyota stated that the 'T' stands for toolbox which denotes that the car can be used as such. Meanwhile, 'j' stands for joy that describes the feeling of visiting new places.

The 2017 Tokyo Motor Show will be open to the public from October 28 – November 5.
