Who would have believed that the Yaris nameplate is already 20 years old?
First making its world debut at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, the Yaris immediately went head on and faced both the European and Japanese establishment in the B-segment hatchback scene. After two decades and three generations later, the Yaris is still going strong and is now serving as the brand's WRC fighter.
To celebrate the momentous occasion, Toyota recently released a special edition model called the 'Y20'. It features a bespoke exterior finish that pays homage to the original launch car, and comes standard with a new multimedia system that offers smartphone integration.
Like the original 1998 launch car that was revealed in Paris, the Y20 special dons the same gold paintwork used by the original hatchback 20 years ago. However, Toyota decided to add a bit of twist to the gold hue by complementing it with a dark bi-tone gray roof. The special edition hatchback also comes with gray-colored 16-inch, ten-spoke alloy wheels, side moldings, front grill, side mirror caps and foglight surrounds complete with chrome accents.
Other unique add-ons on the Y20 include: shark-fin antenna color mated to the roof, dark-tinted rear privacy glass and a special 'Y20' badging at the rear.
Open the doors and the dark gray motif makes its way inside the Y20. From the center console, steering wheel inserts and new fabric upholstery, the dark-colored trim gives the hatchback a more upscale look. Providing some brightwork inside the cabin comes courtesy of satin chrome air vents, audio speaker and meter surrounds, as well as the gear knob trim. Unique black carpet mats and additional Y20 badging complete the interior revisions on the special edition Yaris.
As mentioned earlier, the Y20 gets a new multimedia system that comes with smartphone connectivity. To be available as well on 2019 model year Yaris hatchbacks, the new system offers easy smartphone integration for quick access to popular apps, as well as to contacts. Once connected, the smartphone can be operated via the touchscreen. It also supports smartphone-based navigation, voice commands and multi-touch gestures.
The Y20 special is now available in Europe and serves as a mid-grade offering in the nameplate's model lineup.
