The current Toyota RAV4 has been on the market for quite some time now and, needless to say, it's due for an all-new model. Just before the New York Auto Show, Toyota has given the public a sneek peek of the long-running crossover by showing a shadowy figure of the next-gen model.
It isn't much but we see the general outline of the all-new RAV4. The fifth-generation RAV4 boasts a more lower, more angular-looking body. From its upright nose to its steeply-raked tailgate, it appears to be sleeker in profile to the current generation. The RAV4 also seems to get a longer body, complemented by an extended wheelbase.
As far as this preview goes, it looks like it will follow the form of the FT-AC concept from this year's North American International Auto Show. That concept saw a similar shape to Toyota's teaser image and there is another clue hinting that the concept may indeed for the basis of the RAV4. Toyota mentioned that the concept measures at about 4,700 mm long, right about the same as the current car. The length of the concept car puts it right in the C-segment crossover class.
Another hint comes from Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager for Toyota USA. He had mentioned that the FT-AC will more than likely be available in showrooms in the future. With that, we might just see most of the FT-AC's design cues to be applied to RAV4.
Should it be the FT-AC transition as the production-spec RAV4, it would appear that the crossover may just get its most revolutionary redesign yet. Taking elements from the larger SUVs from Toyota, it is likely to get upswept headlights and a bold hexagonal grill when it reaches showrooms. There's also the high-mounted fog-lights and it might even get the faux skid plate from the concept as well. The concept's rear fascia is also a departure from the current RAV4 and, with the teaser photo showing a steeply raked tailgate design, we might just see it reach production.
The fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 is set to be fully revealed on March 28, 2018 at the New York Auto Show.
