While the world is abuzz with the latest test for SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy re-usable heavy rocket, the launch itself carried a rather curious passenger: A cherry red Tesla Roadster. Supposedly acting as some sort of ballast for the rocket, Elon Musk previously announched that he would be strapping his own electric sports car onto the rocket – and he actually went and did it.
As the rocket concluded its flight, the Roadster was deployed on its preliminary orbit. The Roadster was jettisoned along with a driver behind the wheel – a dummy nicknamed ‘Starman’. Starman’s role may be that of providing telemetry and information as he drifts in orbit around the earth.
For entertainment he is even accompanied by some tunes courtesy of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Another easter egg comes in the form of the message on the infotainment screen – a seeming nod to a familiar quote from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Eventually the goal for the Space Roadster is for it to reach 250 million miles away from earth – reaching the orbit of Mars to provide more information from the red planet. As big a goal this is, at the rate SpaceX development is going we may see more Teslas in space in the near future.
